Getting there and on site anemities.

This park has 3 major parking lots, 2 on top of what we Utahns call the Point of the Mountain and 1 at the base.  It is south facing over Utah Valley and just minutes off I-15 taking the Lehi exit onto the frontage road. If Google maps takes you into the neighborhood, turn around and head for the gravel pit at the bend in the road, signage at the bend makes it obvious to where to proceed. If one is into overnighting a small RV campgroun runs along the Northside with a nightly fee. Expect this place to be busy with parasails when the south wind is ‘just right’ on weekend mornings or evenings, this makes a dreary activation fun. Though part of Utah State Parks, there is not a fee for day use. A pit toilet is on site and a couple of park benches just inside the flight  zone but, no picnic tables.

Operations

If one wants to know how well their antennas stays up in winy conditions,  come here. The wind is steady and predictable throughout various times of day. My recommendation is to keep the foot print of your antennas small during busy times and well marked (pota performers)  when it is not as others use this area as an off leash dog park. There are no trees. You will need to bring your own mast. Do not expect the ground to give when driving stakes. My preferred antenna is a 17ft whip on a tri-mag mount or any mast I can attach to my vehicle. If I use a long wire, random end fed or end fed half wave, I’ll bring a weight to hold down the far end.  This site is far enough off the mountains where I can get good skips to the Midwest and all over the west coast. I do struggle to get Colorado and SW Wyoming. I’ve made contacts on all the bands I operate on.

If you are a Technician, come on up. With the view over Utah Valley, get on the 146.76 repeater, aka the 76, to make a contact or two and ask them to join you on Simplex if the other operator is in Utah Valley. PS limited contacst can be made on VHF Simplex if the operator is in Salt Lake or other regions this repeater hits.

Wrap up

Come on up. The road is good. The view is great. Sunrise and sunsets can be amazing.

73 and hope to see you on the air. https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/flight-park/
